Brothers of Character, Mentoring Programs

BOC Implements New Vocational Training Program

The Alabama Chapter of the Brothers of Character has a new vocational training program that teaches teenage boys basic skills in several fields within the construction industry. Participants will learn drywall techniques, masonry, electrical and plumbing basics, including required tools and how to use them.  These are skills that will not only prepare them for employment in the construction industry but will prove valuable life skills.

The Benefits of Vocational Training

1. Job Opportunities

The construction industry provides numerous job opportunities for individuals looking for lucrative careers. According to a report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of job openings in the construction sector is expected to grow by 4% from 2019 to 2029. This growth will create additional job opportunities for skilled construction workers.

2. High Demand for Skilled Workers

The construction industry relies on skilled workers to execute their daily operations. Vocational training programs train individuals with the necessary skills and practical knowledge needed to be highly skilled and competitive. The recent pandemic amplified the demand for skilled workers as many projects were delayed, causing a need for re-skilling and up-skilling.

3. Affordability
Vocational training programs are typically more affordable than traditional college degrees.
4. Immediate Employment

Vocational training programs provide opportunities for immediate employment.  This is instrumental, especially for graduates with little or no work experience.

5. Shorter Duration

Construction vocational training programs typically last six months to two years. The shorter duration enables students to gain practical knowledge, securing jobs quickly with a host of career options within their specific fields.
